Pair of 18th century English giltwood armchairs , Circa 1775
H-97cm W-57cm D-57cm Seat H-45cm
Pair of 18th century carved gilt wood English armchairs. Probably from Thomas Chippendale’s workshop - note there are screw holes on the underside of the rails, a feature commonly associated with seat furniture from Thomas Chippendales workshop. Chippendale liked French gilding and used to send his seat furniture to France to be gilded. The seats were screwed by the rails upright to batons so as to keep them safe during the journey.
