Stylish late 18th century Continental three drawer commode with a strong Egyptian influence. The black marble top over three burr fronted drawers which open on the key. Carved Pharao's heads to the top of the legs and stylised feet to the bottom. The end panels are also burr.
At the end of the 18th century and into the nineteenth century Western culture become fascinated, and influenced by, Egyptian motifs and design. Napoleons conquest of Egypt, the discovery of the Rosetta Stone in 1799 and subsequent archaeological discoveries shed new light on this ancient, mystical civilisation. As a result there was an influx of Egyptian artefacts to European museums and the resulting influence can be seen across art, design, architecture and literature, continuing to this day.
